About Lucerne/Switzerland
Lucerne – City of Tourism and Culture
Lucerne lies at the shores of the Lake of Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) and is the capital of Central Switzerland, with some 60,000 inhabitants and a growing municipal area. The nearby Alpine foothills offer an impressive view of the ice-capped peaks of the Alps, and the well-preserved medieval town centre dates back to the 8th century A.D. when a small monastery of the order of St. Benedictine was founded at the mouth of the River Reuss.
Lucerne boasts world-famous landmarks such as the Chapel Bridge (Kappelbrücke) and the Wasserturm. Apart from tourist attractions, the town also offers a modern infrastructure with a wide range of cinemas, museums, theatres, restaurants, clubs, and an extensive andwell-run public transport system. The Lucerne Festival, the Rose d’Or, the Museum of Transport and the Rosengart Collection (Picasso, Paul Klee), but also shops specialized in watches and jewelry, attract an international clientele.
Lucerne is conveniently located and well-connected to many other places of interest and major cities such as Zürich, Bern, Basel, and Geneva. Ski and hiking areas are at your doorstep, and water sports afficianados (sailing, rowing, surfing, swimming in and outdoors) will find many activities nearby.
